Sleep apnea is a very serious problem, characterized by frequent pauses in breathing (sometimes as often as hundreds of times each night) as well as severe snoring. If your partner is complaining about your awful snoring or you wake up feeling like you struggled through sleep, you may be suffering from sleep apnea.
At our Hershey dental office, we will provide you with the information you need to understand sleep apnea and how it impacts your life. We know that one of these sleep apnea treatments is right for you. Which one we recommend will depend on the severity of your condition:
- Snore Guards – It may seem unlikely that a serious problem like sleep apnea can be treated with a simple device available at our Hershey dental office, but it's true! This FDA-approved device is appropriate for those with mild to moderate sleep apnea. It is similar to a mouth guard and works to clear your airway by positioning your jaw slightly forward. Our snore guards are customized specifically for you, so they're comfortable to wear.
- CPAP – CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) therapy works by increasing air pressure in your throat, which prevents the air passage from closing up when you breathe in. Your doctor will usually recommend CPAP for moderate to severe sleep apnea.
- Sleep Apnea Surgery – In some cases, the structure of the mouth and throat requires surgery to treat severe sleep apnea. The type of treatment your surgeon recommends will depend on the cause of the sleep apnea. Common approaches involve widening the airway by the removal and repositioning of excess throat tissue, trimming the soft palate, removing your tonsils, and repositioning some of the muscles of the soft palate.
